The Great Ocean Road is one of Australia's most iconic drives, stretching 243 kilometres along Victoria's dramatic southwest coast. Here's how to make the most of it.
How Long Do You Need?
While you can technically drive it in a day, we recommend 2-3 days to truly appreciate the scenery, hikes, and towns along the way.
Must-Stop Highlights
- Twelve Apostles: The star attraction. Towering limestone stacks rising from the Southern Ocean - Loch Ard Gorge: A stunning gorge with a fascinating shipwreck history - Apollo Bay: A charming seaside town perfect for an overnight stay - Kennett River: Pull over here for wild koalas in the eucalyptus trees along the road - Bells Beach: Famous surf spot and home to the annual Rip Curl Pro competition
Driving Tips
Drive the road from east to west (Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles) so you're on the ocean side and can pull over more easily for photo stops. Watch for wildlife on the road, especially at dawn and dusk.
