The Great Barrier Reef stretches over 2,300 kilometres along Australia's northeast coast, and it's one of the most extraordinary natural wonders on Earth. Here's how to experience it right.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season (June to October) offers the best visibility and calmest waters. November through May is warmer but can bring jellyfish season. Stinger suits are provided on most tours.
Top Reef Spots
- Cairns & Port Douglas: The most popular gateway towns with hundreds of reef tour options - Whitsunday Islands: Combine reef snorkelling with beach hopping at Whitehaven Beach - Lady Elliot Island: A pristine eco-resort island with incredible snorkelling straight off the beach
Snorkelling vs Diving
You don't need to be a certified diver to see the reef. Most tours include snorkelling gear, and the shallow reef areas are teeming with life. If you want to go deeper, introductory dives are available for beginners.
Responsible Tourism
Choose reef-friendly sunscreen (zinc-based), never touch the coral, and book with operators who contribute to reef conservation. Look for eco-certified operators.
