McLaren Vale is South Australia's most charming wine region - a place where rolling vineyards run down to the sea, boutique cellar doors sit beside olive groves and almond orchards, and the coastline offers some of the most dramatic beach scenery in Australia. Just 45 minutes south of Adelaide, McLaren Vale is known for its exceptional Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon, produced by over 80 cellar doors ranging from grand estates to tiny family operations run from sheds and converted stables. The region is also the gateway to the Fleurieu Peninsula, with its stunning coastal walks, historic towns, and the ferry to Kangaroo Island.
Getting There
McLaren Vale is approximately 40km south of Adelaide, about a 45-minute drive via the Southern Expressway and Main South Road. There is no direct public transport to the wine region, so you'll need a car or a guided tour. Many wine tour operators run day trips from Adelaide. If you plan to taste extensively, a guided tour or designated driver is strongly recommended.
d'Arenberg Cube

The d'Arenberg Cube is McLaren Vale's most striking landmark - a five-storey, Rubik's Cube-inspired building designed by winemaker Chester Osborn. The Cube houses:
- Cellar door: Tasting d'Arenberg's extensive range, including the iconic Dead Arm Shiraz and The Stump Jump blends.
- d'Arenberg Restaurant: Fine dining on the top floor with panoramic vineyard and ocean views. Degustation from $145.
- Alternate Realities Museum: A quirky, immersive art experience exploring the world of wine and winemaking.
- Virtual fermenter: An interactive experience that takes you inside the winemaking process.
Entry to the Cube is $12 (redeemable against wine purchases). It's worth visiting just for the architecture and views.
The Shiraz Trail
The Shiraz Trail is a sealed walking and cycling path that runs 7km between McLaren Vale township and Willunga, passing through vineyards, olive groves, and bushland. It's flat, easy, and perfect for a morning ride with cellar door stops along the way. Bike hire is available in McLaren Vale township. The trail connects to the longer Coast to Vines Trail that extends all the way to the coast.
