Kalbarri: Nature's Window & Coastal Gorges

Kalbarri is one of Western Australia's most dramatic natural destinations - a place where the ancient Murchison River has carved deep gorges through 400-million-year-old red and white banded sandstone, and towering coastal cliffs plunge into the turquoise Indian Ocean. The town of Kalbarri sits at the mouth of the Murchison River, surrounded by the vast Kalbarri National Park, which protects both the inland river gorges and a spectacular stretch of sea cliffs. The park's iconic Nature's Window - a natural rock arch framing the river gorge - is one of Australia's most photographed landmarks, and the new Kalbarri Skywalk offers breathtaking views over the gorge from cantilevered platforms 100 metres above the river. Kalbarri is an easy and rewarding stop on any Western Australian road trip.

Getting There

Kalbarri is approximately 590km north of Perth - about a 6-hour drive via the Indian Ocean Drive and North West Coastal Highway. The drive is scenic and easy, passing through Geraldton (a good lunch stop). Rex Regional Express and some charter operators fly to Kalbarri Airport from Perth (limited services). TransWA operates coach services from Perth. Once in Kalbarri, a car is essential for exploring the national park - the gorge and coastal sections are spread over a wide area. The town centre is small and walkable.

Nature's Window is Kalbarri's most famous attraction - a natural rock arch that perfectly frames the Murchison River gorge below:

  • The arch: Formed by millions of years of erosion, this window-shaped rock formation frames a spectacular view down the red and white banded gorge. It is one of Australia's most photographed natural landmarks.
  • The walk: Nature's Window is reached via a short, easy 1km loop walk from the car park. The trail crosses flat sandstone terrain with information boards explaining the geology.
  • Photography: The best light is in the early morning, when the sun illuminates the gorge through the arch. Arrive before 9am for the best photos and fewer crowds.
  • The Loop Trail: For a more challenging experience, the 8km Loop Trail continues from Nature's Window along the gorge rim and down to the river, before climbing back up. Allow 3-4 hours. The trail is exposed and can be hot - carry plenty of water.
  • Z-Bend: Another spectacular gorge lookout, reached via a short walk from a separate car park. The trail to the river below is steep and challenging but leads to a beautiful swimming hole.

Kalbarri Skywalk

The Kalbarri Skywalk is a dramatic new addition to the national park - two cantilevered viewing platforms that extend over the rim of the Murchison River gorge:

  • The platforms: Two steel and glass platforms extend 17 and 25 metres over the edge of the gorge, 100 metres above the river. The views are extraordinary - the banded red and white sandstone walls stretch into the distance, and the river winds through the ancient landscape below.
  • Access: A 2km return walk from the car park on a sealed, accessible path leads to the Skywalk platforms. The walk includes interpretive displays about the geology and Aboriginal significance of the gorge.
  • Best time: Morning offers the best light on the gorge walls. The platforms face east, so the afternoon sun backlights the gorge beautifully.
  • Included: The Skywalk is within Kalbarri National Park (entry $15 per vehicle per day).

Coastal Cliffs

Kalbarri's coastal section offers dramatic sea cliffs, rock formations, and ocean views:

  • Island Rock & Natural Bridge: Two of the most spectacular coastal formations. Island Rock is a stack separated from the mainland by erosion, while the Natural Bridge is a massive rock arch over the ocean. Both are easily accessed from car parks along the coastal road.
  • Eagle Gorge: A small gorge carved into the coastal cliffs by ocean waves. A lookout provides views of the gorge and the surrounding cliff line.
  • Red Bluff: Towering red sandstone cliffs overlooking the ocean. A popular viewing point, especially at sunset when the cliffs glow crimson.
  • Pot Alley Beach: A secluded beach at the base of the coastal cliffs, accessible via a steep trail. The beach is surrounded by towering red cliffs and is stunning but exposed to the open ocean.
  • Mushroom Rock: A distinctive mushroom-shaped rock formation carved by wind and wave erosion. A short walk from the car park.
  • Bigurda Trail: An 8km one-way coastal walk connecting several of the cliff-top lookouts. Can be done in sections.

Murchison River & Town

- River gorge: The Murchison River gorge extends over 80km through the national park, with walls up to 150 metres high. The banded sandstone formations - alternating layers of red (iron-rich) and white (quartz-rich) - are 400 million years old. - Pelican feeding: Kalbarri's pelicans are fed daily at 8:45am on the foreshore. A fun, free experience. - River cruises: Scenic river cruises operate from the Kalbarri foreshore, heading upriver into the gorge (from $30 adults). - Fishing: Kalbarri is a popular fishing destination, with excellent reef, beach, and river fishing. Charters operate from the Kalbarri foreshore. - Beaches: The town beach and Blue Holes are popular swimming and snorkelling spots. Chinaman's Beach, south of town, offers calmer water.

Practical Tips

- Best time to visit: Winter and spring (June-November) offer the most pleasant temperatures (15-28C) and wildflower season (August-October) brings spectacular displays. Summer (December-February) can be very hot (35-45C) - walk early in the morning and carry lots of water. - Gorge safety: The gorge trails are exposed with no shade. Carry at least 2 litres of water per person. Start walks early in the morning, especially in summer. The trails can be slippery - wear proper footwear. - National park entry: A WA Parks pass ($15 per vehicle per day) is required for both the gorge and coastal sections of Kalbarri National Park. - Combining with the Coral Coast: Kalbarri is an excellent stop on a Coral Coast road trip from Perth. Combine with the Pinnacles (4 hours south) and Shark Bay/Monkey Mia (3.5 hours north). - Wildflowers: The Kalbarri region is one of WA's premier wildflower destinations. Over 800 species flower between August and October, including the iconic Kalbarri catspaw. - Flies: Flies can be persistent, especially in the gorge area during warmer months. Bring a fly net or hat with a fly veil.
