Victor Harbor & the Fleurieu Peninsula

Victor Harbor is South Australia's favourite coastal escape - a charming seaside town on the Fleurieu Peninsula, about 80km south of Adelaide. Famous for its horse-drawn tram to Granite Island, its spectacular whale watching between June and September, and the heritage Cockle Train steam railway along the coast, Victor Harbor has been drawing holiday-makers since the 1800s. The surrounding Fleurieu Peninsula offers dramatic coastline, world-class surf, wildlife encounters, and easy access to the ferry for Kangaroo Island. It's a perfect destination for families, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a relaxing coastal break.

Getting There

Victor Harbor is approximately 80km south of Adelaide, about a 1-hour drive via the Southern Expressway and Victor Harbor Road. The scenic route via McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu Peninsula adds about 30 minutes but passes through beautiful wine country and coast. SouthLink bus services connect Victor Harbor to Adelaide, though a car gives much more flexibility. The town is also connected to Goolwa and Port Elliot by the heritage Cockle Train railway.

Horse-Drawn Tram to Granite Island

Victor Harbor's most iconic attraction is the horse-drawn tram - a heritage tramway that has been carrying passengers along the 630-metre causeway from the mainland to Granite Island since 1894. The tram is pulled by magnificent Clydesdale horses and the ride takes about 10 minutes each way. It's one of the last horse-drawn trams in the world and a quintessential South Australian experience.

On Granite Island, you can: - Walk the 1.5km Kaiki Trail loop around the island, with interpretive signs about the island's natural and cultural history. - Visit the penguin colony - Granite Island is home to a small population of little penguins. Guided penguin tours run at dusk during breeding season (seasonal availability - check locally). - Enjoy panoramic views from the island's summit of Encounter Bay and the coastline.

The tram runs daily (weather permitting). Adults $10, children $6.

Whale Watching

Victor Harbor is one of Australia's premier whale watching destinations. Southern right whales migrate from Antarctica to the sheltered waters of Encounter Bay each year between June and September to calve and nurse their young. At the peak of the season (July-August), whales can often be seen from the shore, sometimes just metres from the rocks.

Key whale watching spots: - The Bluff (Rosetta Head): A steep but rewarding climb to the top of this rocky headland, offering panoramic views and an excellent whale watching vantage point. Whales are regularly seen in the waters below. - Granite Island: The causeway and island offer elevated viewpoints over the bay. - South Australian Whale Centre: A museum and interpretive centre in Victor Harbor dedicated to whales and the region's whaling history. Entry $12. - Whale watching cruises: Several operators run boat tours during whale season for closer encounters (from $85).

Granite Island & Encounter Bay

Encounter Bay stretches from Victor Harbor to Port Elliot and beyond, offering a beautiful stretch of coastline with beaches, rock pools, and coastal walks:

  • Petrel Cove: A dramatic beach just west of Victor Harbor, set beneath towering cliffs. The surf can be powerful - it's better for walking and photography than swimming.
  • Port Elliot: A charming coastal village with the beautiful Horseshoe Bay - one of the safest swimming beaches on the south coast. Great cafes and a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Middleton Beach: Popular surf beach between Port Elliot and Goolwa. Consistent waves and a surf lifesaving club.
  • Waitpinga Beach: Wild and remote, this beach is not safe for swimming but offers dramatic coastal scenery and great surf.

Cockle Train

The Cockle Train is a heritage steam and diesel railway that runs between Victor Harbor and Goolwa, following the coastline through Port Elliot. The line was originally built in 1887 to transport goods and passengers, and today it operates as a tourist attraction on Sundays, public holidays, and school holidays. The 30-minute journey offers wonderful coastal views. Adult fares from $28 return.

Goolwa, at the other end of the line, is a historic river port at the mouth of the Murray River. It's worth exploring the Signal Point interpretive centre, the wharf precinct, and taking a cruise on the PS Oscar W paddlesteamer.
