Margaret River: Wine, Surf & Ancient Caves

Margaret River is one of Australia's premier wine and food destinations - a stunning stretch of Western Australia's south-west coast where world-class wineries, ancient limestone caves, towering karri forests, and powerful surf breaks converge. The region produces some of Australia's finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blends, and its artisan food scene rivals any in the country. Beyond the cellar doors, Margaret River offers extraordinary natural beauty: a coastline of dramatic headlands and turquoise bays, underground cave systems adorned with crystal formations, and forests of giant karri and marri trees. It is one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots, with wildflowers, birdlife, and marine life found nowhere else on Earth.

Getting There

Margaret River is approximately 270km south of Perth - about a 3-hour drive via the Forrest Highway and Bussell Highway. The drive is scenic and easy, passing through Bunbury and Busselton. South Western Coach Lines operates bus services from Perth to Margaret River (about 4.5 hours, from $40 one way). There is no commercial airport at Margaret River, but Busselton-Margaret River Airport (BQB) receives some seasonal flights. Once in the region, a car is essential for exploring wineries, beaches, and caves - the attractions are spread across a wide area. Several wine tour operators offer day tours from Perth or within the region with transport included.

Wineries & Cellar Doors

Margaret River produces less than 3% of Australia's wine but accounts for over 20% of the premium market. The region is home to over 200 wineries, many with cellar doors open for tastings:

  • Leeuwin Estate: One of the founding wineries of Margaret River and one of Australia's most celebrated. The Art Series Chardonnay is world-renowned. The cellar door offers tastings ($15-30), and the restaurant serves fine dining among the vines (mains $42-58). The annual Leeuwin Concert Series brings international artists to the vineyard.
  • Vasse Felix: The region's founding winery (established 1967). Excellent Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The restaurant is one of the region's best, with vineyard views and a seasonal menu (mains $38-52). Free tastings at the cellar door.
  • Cullen Wines: A pioneer of biodynamic and organic winemaking in Australia. The Diana Madeline Cabernet blend is a benchmark. The cellar door and restaurant are set among beautiful biodynamic gardens. Tastings from $10.
  • Voyager Estate: A grand Cape Dutch-style estate with beautiful rose gardens. Excellent Chardonnay and Cabernet. The restaurant offers fine dining with matched wines (tasting menu from $120).
  • Brookland Valley: A stunning vineyard setting with a gallery and the excellent Flutes Restaurant. Free tastings and affordable wines.

Caves & Underground Wonders

The Margaret River region sits on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, a limestone formation that contains over 100 caves:

  • Jewel Cave: The largest show cave in Western Australia, featuring an enormous main chamber and one of the longest straw stalactites in any tourist cave. Guided tours run regularly ($23 adults). The cave maintains a constant 14C - bring a jacket.
  • Mammoth Cave: A self-guided audio tour through a fossil-rich cave containing the remains of extinct megafauna, including the jaw of a Zygomaturus (a giant wombat-like creature). Well-suited for families ($23 adults).
  • Lake Cave: The most visually dramatic cave, featuring a permanent underground lake reflecting a suspended "table" formation. Guided tours only ($23 adults). The 300-step descent through a sinkhole surrounded by karri forest is spectacular.
  • Ngilgi Cave: Near Yallingup, this cave is significant to the Wardandi Noongar people and offers semi-guided and adventure caving experiences ($23 adults).
  • Multi-cave passes: A 4-cave pass ($60 adults) offers excellent value if you plan to visit multiple caves.

Surf Breaks & Beaches

Margaret River is one of Australia's premier surfing destinations, hosting the annual World Surf League Championship Tour event:

  • Main Break (Surfers Point): The region's most famous wave - a powerful reef break that hosts the Margaret River Pro. For experienced surfers only. Spectacular to watch from the cliff-top viewing area even if you don't surf.
  • Prevelly Beach: A beautiful beach below Surfers Point, suitable for swimming in calm conditions. The Gnarabup Beach nearby is more sheltered and family-friendly.
  • Yallingup: A stunning bay with a more sheltered beach and consistent waves for intermediate surfers. The Caves House Hotel overlooks the bay.
  • Smiths Beach: A wide, sandy beach with waves suitable for all levels. Board hire and surf lessons available.
  • Canal Rocks: A dramatic formation of granite rocks forming natural channels. Not for swimming but spectacular to see - especially when swell pushes through the narrow channels.

Cape Naturaliste & Cape Leeuwin

- Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse: The northern cape of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, with a heritage lighthouse (tours $15), whale watching platform (humpbacks June-December), and coastal walking trails. - Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse: The south-western tip of Australia, where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. The tallest mainland lighthouse in Australia. Tours $15. - Cape to Cape Track: A 135km walking trail connecting the two capes along some of Australia's most spectacular coastline. Can be done in sections or as a multi-day through-hike (5-7 days).

  • Luxury: Cape Lodge (boutique luxury among vineyards, from $450), Pullman Bunker Bay Resort (beachfront luxury near Cape Naturaliste, from $350).

Practical Tips

- Best time to visit: Autumn (March-May) offers warm days, fewer crowds, and vintage season at the wineries. Spring (September-November) brings wildflowers and whale watching. Summer (December-February) is peak season - book well ahead. - Driving: A car is essential. The region's attractions are spread over a 100km stretch of coastline. If planning to visit wineries, consider a designated driver or a wine tour with transport. - Caves: Caves maintain a constant temperature of about 14C year-round. Wear enclosed shoes and bring a light jacket regardless of the weather above ground. - Wildlife: Watch for kangaroos on roads at dawn and dusk. The region is also home to a thriving population of bottlenose dolphins, humpback whales (June-December), and diverse birdlife. - Wildflowers: From August to November, the region's bushland explodes with wildflowers - the Boranup Karri Forest and Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park are prime spots.
