Byron Bay has evolved from a sleepy surfing village into one of Australia's most sought-after destinations, yet it still manages to hold onto the laid-back, bohemian spirit that made it famous. Located in the far north of New South Wales, just south of the Queensland border, Byron is where rainforest-covered hinterland meets pristine surf beaches, and where wellness culture blends with world-class dining.
Getting There
Byron Bay is about 2 hours south of Brisbane or 10 hours north of Sydney by car. The nearest airports are Gold Coast Airport (about 45 minutes north) and Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (30 minutes south) with direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne. There's also a coach service from Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
The Lighthouse Walk
The Cape Byron Walking Track is arguably the most famous coastal walk in New South Wales. The 3.7-kilometre loop takes you from the town centre to the Cape Byron Lighthouse, the most easterly point of mainland Australia. Start early in the morning for whale watching (June to November) and to beat the crowds. The views from the lighthouse across the Pacific Ocean are extraordinary, and dolphins are regularly spotted from the cliff path.
Beaches
Byron has some of the best beaches in Australia, each with its own character:
- Main Beach: Right in town, patrolled and perfect for swimming. The gentle waves make it great for beginner surfers.
- The Pass: Byron's most famous surf break, a long right-hand point break that peels along the headland. Even if you don't surf, watching from the rocks is a treat.
- Wategos Beach: A sheltered, north-facing beach at the base of the lighthouse. Calm water, beautiful sand, and a favourite of locals.
- Tallows Beach: A long, wild stretch of sand south of the lighthouse. Less crowded and great for a long walk. Watch for rips as it's unpatrolled.
- Belongil Beach: North of town, relaxed and dog-friendly. Great for sunset walks.
Surfing
Byron is a surfing town at its core. The Pass is the crown jewel, but there are breaks for every level. Beginners should head to Main Beach where several surf schools operate daily lessons (around $70-80 for a group lesson). More experienced surfers can explore The Wreck, Cosy Corner, and Broken Head.
The Hinterland
Byron's hinterland is often overlooked by visitors but it's just as stunning as the coast:
- Bangalow: A gorgeous heritage village 15 minutes inland with boutique shops, excellent cafes, and a famous monthly market. The Bangalow Hotel does a great pub lunch.
- Federal: A tiny village in the hills with the famous Doma Japanese cafe and a community hall that hosts events and markets.
- Minyon Falls: A spectacular 100-metre waterfall in Nightcap National Park, about 40 minutes from Byron. The walk to the base is challenging but rewarding.
- Crystal Castle: A unique attraction set in beautiful gardens with giant crystals, a Buddha Walk, and panoramic hinterland views. It's spiritual, beautiful, and unlike anywhere else.
Where to Eat: Budget-Friendly
- Bay Kebabs: A Byron institution for late-night food. Generous and cheap.
- The Top Shop: Famous fish and chips with ocean views from the park. Cash preferred.
- Orgasmic Food: Despite the name, it's a wholesome vegetarian/vegan takeaway with big portions and affordable prices.
- Suffolk Bakery: Outstanding pies, pastries, and coffee in nearby Suffolk Park.
Where to Eat: Mid-Range to Fine
- The Farm: A working farm turned dining precinct featuring Three Blue Ducks restaurant, a bakery, a produce store, and a flower shop. The paddock-to-plate philosophy is the real deal here.
- Harvest Newrybar: Set in a restored bakery in nearby Newrybar, Harvest offers seasonal menus using local produce. The long lunch is legendary. Mains $35-48.
- Beach Byron Bay: On the beach with Mediterranean-inspired menus and cocktails. Mains $32-42.
- Fleet: A tiny, award-winning restaurant in nearby Brunswick Heads offering a concise seasonal tasting menu. Bookings essential and worth it. Set menu around $100.
- Barrio Eatery & Bar: Latin American-inspired dishes with excellent cocktails. Great atmosphere. Mains $28-38.
Wellness & Markets
Byron is the wellness capital of Australia:
- Byron Farmers Market: Thursday mornings at the Cavanbah Centre. The best market in town for fresh produce, artisan goods, and breakfast.
- Byron Community Market: First Sunday of each month at the Butler Street Reserve. Huge market with hundreds of stalls.
- Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens: Meditation, sound healing, and crystal experiences.
- Yoga: Multiple studios including Byron Yoga Centre and Yoga Shala. Drop-in classes from $20.
Where to Stay
- Budget: Wake Up! Byron Bay backpackers, Arts Factory Lodge (famous for its quirky vibe), or camp at First Sun Holiday Park right on the beach.
- Mid-Range: Atlantic Byron Bay, Elements of Byron (stunning eco-resort), or The Bower Byron Bay.
- Luxury: Raes on Wategos is Byron's most exclusive boutique hotel with just seven suites overlooking Wategos Beach. Also try Crystalbrook Byron for modern luxury.
Practical Tips
- Parking: Byron has serious parking problems, especially in summer. The pay parking areas fill quickly. Consider using the park-and-ride from the Byron Industrial Estate on busy days, or better yet, hire a bicycle. - Weather: Subtropical climate with warm summers (December-February) and mild winters. Summer also brings afternoon thunderstorms and higher humidity. Winter days are still warm enough for the beach. - Crowds: Byron gets very busy during school holidays and over Christmas/New Year. Visit in shoulder season (March-May or September-November) for the best combination of good weather and fewer crowds. - Day Trips: Byron is a great base for visiting Nimbin (the alternative lifestyle capital, 70 minutes), Brunswick Heads (a quieter, locals' version of Byron, 15 minutes), and the Gold Coast hinterland.
