Ballarat is a city built on gold. In the 1850s, it was the epicentre of the Victorian gold rush, and the wealth that flowed through the region left behind grand architecture, beautiful gardens, and a cultural legacy that still shapes the city today. Now one of Victoria's largest inland cities, Ballarat combines its rich heritage with a thriving contemporary art scene, excellent food, and one of Australia's best living history museums.
Getting There
Ballarat is about 90 minutes west of Melbourne by car via the Western Freeway. V/Line trains run regularly from Southern Cross Station (about 75 minutes). The city is also a natural stop on the way to the Grampians or the Great Ocean Road via the inland route.
Sovereign Hill
Sovereign Hill is Ballarat's star attraction and one of Australia's most popular heritage experiences. This open-air museum recreates an 1850s gold mining settlement, complete with costumed characters, working shops, horse-drawn coaches, and gold panning. It's incredibly well done and engaging for all ages.
Highlights include: - Gold panning: Try your luck panning for real gold in the creek. You keep whatever you find. - Underground mine tour: Descend into a recreated mine shaft to understand the conditions miners endured. - Main Street: Browse the period shops, bakery (buy a fresh damper), and watch blacksmiths, candle makers, and other tradespeople at work. - AURA: The spectacular evening sound-and-light show. A multi-million-dollar immersive experience that transforms Sovereign Hill after dark. Booking essential.
Entry is around $45 for adults; AURA is separately ticketed.

Eureka Centre
The Eureka Stockade of 1854 was a pivotal moment in Australian democracy - gold miners rebelled against unfair licence fees and government corruption. The Eureka Centre tells this story through interactive exhibits and houses the original Eureka Flag, one of Australia's most important historical artefacts.

Winters are cold (3-10°C) and frosty. Summers are warm (15-28°C) but can change quickly. - Festivals: The Ballarat Begonia Festival (March) and Royal South Street Eisteddfod (October) are major events. The Winter Festival (June-August) brings special events to Sovereign Hill. - Day trips: Ballarat is an easy day trip from Melbourne, but staying overnight lets you experience Sovereign Hill's AURA show and the city's excellent evening dining scene.
