Do I need a visa to visit Australia?

Last updated 2026-05-08

Short answer: Almost all non-Australian and non-New Zealand citizens need a visa to enter Australia. Most tourists from Europe, the UK, USA, Canada and many Asian countries can apply online for an ETA (subclass 601, AUD $20) or eVisitor (subclass 651, free) granting up to 3 months per visit over 12 months. Always check the Department of Home Affairs site before booking.

ETA (subclass 601): Available to passport holders from the USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan and others. Apply via the official Australian ETA app.

eVisitor (subclass 651): Free, for EU member states and a handful of others (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, Vatican City, UK).

Visitor visa (subclass 600): For longer stays or nationalities not covered by the ETA/eVisitor systems. Costs from AUD $195.

Always apply through immi.homeaffairs.gov.au - third-party sites often charge unnecessary fees.
