Australia or New Zealand - which should I visit first?

Last updated 2026-05-08

Short answer: Choose Australia first if you want iconic cities, beaches, the Great Barrier Reef and the Outback - it's bigger, hotter and more diverse. Choose New Zealand first if you're drawn to dramatic landscapes, hiking, snow sports, and a more compact two-island road trip. Many first-time visitors combine both in a 3-4 week trip via the 3-hour Tasman flight.

Australia strengths: world-class beaches, the Great Barrier Reef, Aboriginal cultural experiences in the Red Centre, food and wine in Margaret River and the Yarra Valley, big-city culture (Sydney, Melbourne).

New Zealand strengths: Lord of the Rings landscapes, fjord cruising in Milford Sound, glacier hiking, Maori culture in Rotorua, Queenstown adventure capital, easy 2-week self-drive loops.

Combine both: 10 days Sydney + East Coast → 10 days South Island NZ. Auckland-Sydney flights are ~$300 return.
